Innovation Fuels Uptick in 2019 Volkswagen Jetta Fuel Economy

As if there wasn’t already reason enough to be excited about the arrival of the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta later this summer, it’s been revealed that innovations and improvements to aerodynamics and powertrain will enable the new Jetta to deliver a phenomenal EPA-estimated 30 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway.*

“Fuel efficiency has long been a key concern of compact sedan buyers, and we knew in designing the new Jetta we would need to push the state of the art,” said Dr. Matthias Erb, Chief Engineering Officer, North American Region, Volkswagen. “But we also knew these buyers demand good value, and our innovations will prove their value in everyday use.”

Leading the fuel economy improvements for the new Jetta is the optimization of the 1.4-liter TSI® engine, which deliver phenomenal drivability and balance while getting even more bang for your buck at the pump. Changes made to the Jetta’s engine include a clutch-driven air conditioner, higher-quality oil, and standard auto stop/star system, the latter of which cuts down on fuel losses when sitting in stop-and-go traffic by as much as 6 percent.

Volkswagen also made significant improvements to the Jetta’s aerodynamics, cutting its drag co-efficient to a class-leading 0.27. New active grille shutters in the front grille and an “air curtain” front bumper design decreases turbulence and improves both performance and efficiency.

The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta is going to be more efficient, but it’s also going to be a heck of a lot more fun to drive. To see for yourself, be sure to stop into Gossett VW Germantown this summer to see what VW has cooked up.

*Where stated, fuel economy values (mpg) are EPA estimates. See www.fueleconomy.gov for details. Actual mileage will vary and depends on several factors including driving habits and vehicle condition.

2017 Volkswagen Jetta Spotlight

2017 Volkswagen Jetta - Memphis, TN
The Jetta looks better than ever thanks to a few nice upgrades.

Since the Volkswagen Jetta first arrived on the market, this model has been making big waves in the compact car segment. With its legendary European performance, spacious interior, and unbeatable safety, the VW Jetta is a great choice for those consumers looking for a fuel-efficient, affordable, and powerful ride.

The Jetta has seen a few changes for the 2017 model year. Now, this sedan offers a rearview camera on all trim levels, while also increasing the availability of driver assistance features like forward collision mitigation. This increase in safety has allowed the Jetta to receive an impressive five-out-of-five stars for overall safety in government crash tests. Despite these changes, the Jetta still comes in four trim levels: S, SE, SEL, and GLI.

Consumers can choose from one of three engine choices to power the 2017 Jetta. The base S and SE models have a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine which pumps out a peppy 150 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. This engine is paired with a five-speed manual transmission or an optional six-speed. A turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder is also available, as is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, which comes only on the GLI.

The Jetta’s interior is where this model truly shines. Despite being a compact car, it still manages to offer the spaciousness and cargo room of a vehicle twice its size. It comes standard with a 5-inch touchscreen interface and Bluetooth connectivity, which makes it easy to stay connected even with a base model. As you move up the trim level range, you will find a number of fine-tuned features that will keep anyone happy, including a premium nine-speaker Fender audio system with subwoofer.

For a fun-to-drive compact car with plenty of features to choose from, look no further than the 2017 Volkswagen Jetta. Find out more about this compact car at Gossett VW Germantown.

Volkswagen Renewable Fuel Assessment Officially Completed

Volkswagen recently announced the official wrap up of its Renewable Diesel Evaluation Program in which the brand collaborated with Solazyme Inc and Amryis Inc. The Volkswagen renewable fuel assessment started in 2012 and measured the environmental impacts of the pre-commercial renewable diesel formula with TDI Clean Diesel technology in 2012 Passat and Jetta TDI models.

Also during that time, Solazyme tested its Soladiesel RD fuel and Amryis tested a plant-sugar derived renewable diesel formula in the same 2012 Passat and Jetta TDI models. Both Solazyme and Amryis used additives to meet certain specifications.

After two years of research and 134,000 miles logged, it was found that each vehicle in the assessment performed very similarly to existing TDI powertrains. Engineers noted that driving dynamics were not affected negatively and fuel economy was either very similar or improved. The study also found that greenhouse gas emissions on a well-to-wheel basis could actually be reduced by more than 50% when using the renewable fuels compared to today’s crude-based fuels.

Ewald Goessmann, Executive Director of Volkswagen Group of America, said, “The successful completion of this collaboration with two leaders in renewable fuels and products highlights how far advanced fuel technology has come in recent years, proving that sustainable fuels are not only produced in more environmentally friendly ways, but can offer similar performance and lower emissions.”
